What Is Sleep Hygiene? Simple Ways to Sleep Better

Updated 30 August 2026 · by The Pillow Whisper

“Sleep hygiene” sounds clinical, but it just means the habits and environment that help you sleep well. You don’t need a complicated routine — a few simple things make a big difference.

This is our hub guide. Each tip links to a more detailed article where we’ve covered it properly.

What is sleep hygiene?

Sleep hygiene is the set of everyday habits and conditions that support good sleep. It’s not one magic trick — it’s a few things working together. And the good news is, most of them are simple and free.

The basics

1. Keep a consistent schedule. Go to bed and get up around the same time every day, even weekends. Your body clock likes rhythm.

2. Make your bedroom dark, cool and quiet.

3. Wind down before bed. Give yourself 30-60 minutes of calm. Dim the lights, put down the screens, and do something relaxing. A warm, dim bedside lamp makes this easier.

4. Watch what you consume. Caffeine late in the day and alcohol close to bedtime can both disrupt sleep. This is one to be honest with yourself about.

5. Make your bed genuinely comfortable. The right pillow and a cosy hot water bottle can make a real difference to how settled you feel.

What doesn’t work

Sleep doesn’t come from forcing it. Lying there worrying about not sleeping usually makes it worse. If you can’t sleep, getting up for a few minutes and doing something quiet in dim light is often better than lying awake frustrated.

When to get help

Sleep hygiene helps most people, but it isn’t a cure for everything. If you’ve had sleep problems for a while that are affecting your health, mood or daily life, talk to a doctor. There’s real help out there — and a pillow won’t fix everything.

Where to start

Pick one thing and make it a habit this week. Our bet: making your bedroom darker and your evening lighter is the easiest win. Then work through the rest.
